Students had the opportunity to observe grass sprouting and will watch grass growing like hair on the heads they created from knee-high nylon stockings and potting soil.

The grain grows very rapidly during the first ten days after fertilization. Our wheat seed sprouted on the 3rd day.

What do you do when you find out National Cheese Pizza Day is in September? You make pizza during an agriculture activity. Pizza is a world-popular dish of Italian origin, made with an oven-baked, flat, generally round bread that is often covered with tomatoes or a tomato-based sauce and mozzarella cheese. Pizza dough is made from wheat, one of Kansas' top agricultural commodities. Tomatoes grow well in Kansas' long, hot summers and are a popular item in our school garden, backyard gardens and farmer’s markets. Cheese is made from the milk of dairy cows.

Pizza first made its appearance in the US with the arrival of Italian immi-

grants in the late 19th century. Pizza was sold on the streets of Italian

neighborhoods in cities like San Franciso, Chicago, New York City and

Philadelphia. Gennaro Lombardi opened the first licensed American pizzeria

in New York City in 1905.

Pollination

Bees can help flowers make seeds. Bees look for pollen and sweet juice. The bee's first job is to move pollen from the anther of one flower to the female stigma of another flower. In other words, when a bee gets pollen from a flower, the pollen sticks to bee. The bee goes to another flower and the pollen falls onto the stigma. Most flowers use this pollen to make seeds. Other flowers use their own pollen to make seeds. Each tiny pollen grain grows into a long tube. They grow until they come to the ovary. Now a male gamete from the pollen tube joins the egg from the ovary and a seed is born.

It's About Time...

"We've been waiting on you to come and let us out," thought the animals. One of the chores our class is responsible for is letting the animals out of their barn stall each morning. This morning Twinkle, Star, and Donkey were waiting patiently for me to let them out to roam free on the school farm.

Construction Crew to Demolition Crew

Winter break, a visit from Jack Frost and Mother Nature helped a group of energetic students in grades 2-5 construct and demolish an igloo in the cold tundra of Southeast Kansas. Students returned to SVCA from break with more than enough snow for building purposes and the opportunity to build something out of the snow. The plans for our construction crew were put into place but the weather became much colder and school was canceled for two days. Upon returning back to school on Monday, students came prepared with all their needed clothing and materials for building. (Those kind hearted teachers followed through with the original plans :oD )

Construction was completed for day 1 but day 2 our icy snow home had started to fall. Decisions were made and the demolition crew took over and destroyed our work of art.

The SVCA Christmas program was held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Students in 4-5 were in for a challenge when their music teacher/classroom teacher had to attend/coach a high school basketball game. The class took control and performed two music selections "Jingle Jive" and "Blitzen's Boogie". They also sang "A Song of Peace" with K-3 and "Just One Candle" with K-3, 6-8. Awesome job!!

Welcome to Service Valley Charter Academy and the 4-5 classroom. Our school is different than most schools in SE Kansas. We are ten miles from the rest of the schools in our district and we're in combined grade level classes. The biggest difference is that learning in our building is geared toward agriculture, horticulture, environment, and technology. www.usd504.org

Where in the world is the Smucker Family?

During the '08 - '09 school year, we started a geography/writing project sending our class mascot around the world to visit different places and meet some fun folks. The project was such a success we have decided to continue mapping the adventures of Cletus Ralphie Smucker this school year. Betty Sue Smucker is joining her big brother for this year's adventures too. The Smuckers have traveled all over the world here are a few examples: Poland; Iraq; the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO; the Steelers and Chargers playoff game in Pittburgh, PA; the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, PA; and concerts like Miranda Lambert, the Eagles, and Miley Cyrus.
